They may sound and look boring and yes they are fairly heavy going but it is your legal right (if you are a citizen of the UK) to work in any of the 15 European Union (EU) Countries and they are committed to helping their citizen's move freely in Europe.
Here are the facts:
* The right to move freely applies only to people who are nationals of EU member states and EEA countries. For example, if you were American, even though you may have been living in the UK for most of your life, these rights would not apply to you.
* Freedom of movement also applies to countries in the European Economic Area (EEA) states, which include Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
* People from the Channel Islands who wish to live or work in EU/EEA countries have encountered some difficulties in the past, so check with the relevant embassy about your right to travel.
* At the moment, several countries are being considered for inclusion in the EU; these are known as pre-accession countries (PAC's). Currently, the PAC's are Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Turkey. The situation is changing over time; see our Further Info section for more details.
* Countries that aren't in the EU obviously have their own laws with regard to living, working and studying in their country. Check out the information in the Country A-Z section.
* Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. have agreed a border-free zone known as the Schengen area, where people are free to travel in and out without formalities.
