Part 05: 'My Pal Jerome' by Brad Manning
Jerome isn’t his real name, did I tell you that? He was born Fabian Xmound Powderly but preferred the name Jerome. So when we are going through passport control I’ve got to remember to call him Fab. Maybe I’ll ask him to call me Super from now on.

Although a couple of years younger than me, J and I are very similar in many ways. We are both sensitive blokes who have trouble picking up women, mainly because we are picky and become too emotionally involved, don’t think I should’ve admitted that. We both love our writing and football. We are too trustworthy and a little naïve at times. And we will both be there for one another. I know that no matter what happens, J will stand by me, which is important when you’re on your own. He is a loyal friend and one that I can trust. I’m sure we will argue along the way but as long as we stick together that is immaterial.

Like any person Jerome has his bad points, but I stress these do not out weigh the abundance of positives that make him the person he has become. Not only does he support Spurs but he has the tendency to never stop talking, about nothing. He is one of these rare people that has the rather annoying habit of talking for ages about absolute shit. He also owns the most horrific items of clothing.

Put it this way, I will not be surprised if he packs his ‘snazzy’ blue suede jacket in his backpack and I’ve never seen shoes as shiny and gleaming as Jerome’s, he takes real pride in buffing those beauties up before he hits the town. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the boy look scruffy so we will have to wait and see how many shirts and pairs of trousers he takes with him. Another annoying trait is that he never grows his afro. I’ve begged him to grow it into a 70’s style wig but he wont have any ever it. And apart from the odd smelly pit and bad dog breath, that is pretty much all of Jerome’s downfalls. Will keep you updated if anything further comes to my attention.

Just thought of another. He has this knack of being sick in the worst of places. Not only did he puke in a girl’s bed that I was gettin’ down with, but he has also managed to shoot vomit all over our local Bar in Stoke after having to down a Yard of Ale. The place was packed, most of its punters cheering on Jerome to neck all the ale. About three quarters of the way through and with most of it down his top anyway, he pulled away and let rip. It was still coming out as he was running to the window and managed to leave half his dinner sprayed up the wall. But guess what? There wasn’t one single drop, splash or chunk on his pristine shoes.

For a bloke that has grown up in Del Boy territory, Peckham, he is remarkably un-streetwise, if such a word exists. His innocence and placid nature is refreshing though. I can’t recall Jerome ever losing his temper, apart from when watching Arsenal play. He is very patient, which he has to be having me as a friend and goes out of his way to make people happy. At the end of the day everyone out there is some-one unique and Jerome is Jerome, or Fabien if you go by his passport and I for one am privileged to not only have him as a mate but also to spend a year with this man whilst we experience a journey of a lifetime.
