So its been a year since I left Staffordshire University and I can honestly say there is not a day goes by that I don’t reminisce on the happiest three years of my life so far. No-one prepares you for leaving an institution that has brought you so much enjoyment. It really doesn’t help either when your life is in limbo, put on hold, so you can save up to go travelling the following year.
The first two months after leaving my second home, Stoke-On-Trent, I just sat around my house, pining for my friends, my hectic social activities, even lectures and tutorials, basically my ‘old’ life. I knew I had to snap out of this helpless mode but found it very hard. A normal day consisted of crawling out of bed at about midday, watching a bit of daytime TV and trying to look for suitable and ambitious media jobs via the internet for about 15 minutes and then having a long session on my PS2, followed by a DVD. It was no life. My mum found it hard to push me because she knew I was going through a difficult period and she herself was going through a messy divorce with my father, which didn’t help either.
Finally I got a break, a meeting with Noel Edmond’s Television Production Company, Unique Group, after trying to sell a TV idea to them. The day before the meeting I realised that if I was successful then my travelling plans, which Jerome and I had agreed on some 6 months ago would be in jeopardy. I decided I had to give it a shot, just for the experience but knew this was a great opportunity. A chance to work within a team coming up with creative ideas for new TV programmes, pretty much one of my ideal jobs. Their offices were situated in a very modern complex in Kensington and when I first went in I felt out of my depth. Mike Brosnan introduced himself to me and took me into an empty office, putting me at ease immediately with his down to earth approach. His first words brought mixed emotions of relief and rejection. He explained that there was no job on offer at present but all going well my CV would stay on their records. Needless to say I haven’t heard back from them.
With no money coming in for either my savings or my limited social life my sister’s fiancé, Chris, offered me a job at his family business as an Electrician. It was a kind gesture and I made up my mind that I would work there until it was time to hit sunnier climates. That way I had no ties and both parties knew the arrangement. Unfortunately I still have a grand to clear on my overdraft but have saved £3,756.33 at present with three weeks to go and I’ve heard there are jobs out in Australia, oh well. In-fact Chris helped me a lot after I returned home. Although an Executive Director, he has a unique student factor about him. He would take the place of Mark and Compo, my PS2 sparring partners up at Stoke.
