Having known Brad now for well over three years, I find it difficult to remember the first time that I actually met the guy. Looking back the first time I heard him was at our university fresher’s ball. Brad managed to get into an argument with someone about wearing a bow tie! To be honest Brad was sticking up for his mate and needless to say with Brad the argument did not last long. It started as we were on our way home, having had a great night out. An over drunk fool was acting up on the coach (think he played rugby so no surprise), and Brad’s mate BJ made a comment about the guy wearing a pink bow tie. A fashion mistake I think you agree. So the two lads were having some banter until the pink bowtie wearing gimp has a sly punch a BJ while stepping off the coach. Obviously a man of Brad’s honour was not going to let him get away with such a low act. So Brad quickly gets off the coach and shows this guy the quickest way to hit the deck. So strangely enough my first memory of Brad is having a ruck in the very first week of uni!
The mate that Brad was sticking up for was BJ, one of his best mates from home who not only happened to be going to the same university, but also lived across the hall from me in student accommodation. As fate would have it, Brad also did the same Journalism course as me, so it was perhaps inevitable that we would meet at some point. Though oddly I never really spoke to Brad that much in the first two years, as naturally you tended to hang with people from halls, and we did not have that many journalism modules together. It was not until the beginning of the third year that we became great pals. I managed to get sick in a bed one night, which Brad wanted to use with a young lady to do the horizontal tango with. Thing is I did not tell them and the poor girl sat in it!!
But to his credit Brad is able to laugh about it now, particularly as I think I did him a great favour, she was not a beauty by any stretch of the imagination. Since then Brad and I have got on very well and have become great friends. This was further strengthened by joining his football team Harry’s Bar, in which there were many great times, even when he managed to score an own goal. Captain Brad became the leader of the rag bag bunch of individuals and managed help turn them into a pretty decent team. Though we did not win many trophies, we were easily the best supported team, and we all got on. So not only is Brad a sporting marvel, he is an intelligent chap, he got a 2-1 degree, as opposed to my 2-2, so we know who the brains belong to. So first impressions can be misleading, from that night on the coach when he had a row over a bow tie, I could not imagine that I would be off travelling the world with. But in all honestly I’m now looking forward to sharing the experience with the guy and can’t think of too many people I would rather go with.
