Illusionist David Blaine attempted to break the world record for holding his breath under water for nine minutes whilst escaping heavy chains. Unfortunately he failed after 7 minutes.
Divers pulled him from the water filled sphere after he began to struggle.
Blaine has previously spent seven days under work in New York where he received food and air through tubes. Crowds of spectators and millions of TV viewers saw him rescued.
Blaine was shaken and weak, he thanked his supporters and left for the hospital.
“This was a very difficult week but you all made it fly by with your strong spirit, your energy. Thank you so much everybody” Blaine told a cheering crowd in Lincoln Square.
The current world record for holding breath under water is exactly eight minutes and 58 seconds. Blaine spent seven minutes and eight seconds holding his breath before being rescued.
He appeared to have escaped from the chains that were attached to his hands but was struggling to free his feet. When the divers entered the tank and pulled him to safety.
Before his attempt to break the world record, Blaine had spent a week in the tank, receiving medical treatment over the weekend.
According to Blaine’s spokesman, the doctors were concerned with his peeling skin and overall condition. They were worried about loss of dexterity. They were also concerned about both his hands and his muscle tone.
So as Blaine could receive medical attention, he stuck his hand out a hole at the top of the tank allowing the doctors to remove specially created gloves, apply lotion and put on new gloves.
Blaine’s doctor has advised against performing the escape.
