FACT! : Floods are now on average nearly twice as frequent as they were one hundred years ago.
Flooding in the UK is increasing due to more extreme weather patterns brought about by global warming. Other reasons may have to do with increased run-off from hard surfaces and from some agricultural land. Coastal flooding is exacerbated by rising sea levels, also a result of global warming.
Since 1999 severe and recurrent flooding has occurred in Gloucestershire, South Wales, Yorkshire, Sussex and many other places. In England overall, there have been "30 river floods on 30 months" (Environment Agency).
Over 7% of the land area of England and Wales is at risk from flooding.
Flooding incidence in the future
The Meteorological Office predict a very significant increase in the incidence of flooding over the next century as a result of climate change. Whether this predicted increase turns out to be cyclical or not, "today's extreme flood is tomorrow's norm".
The effects of flooding
Cleaning, repairs and redecoration after floods can be extensive. The longer water is allowed to stand, the greater is the damage to the building fabric. One inch of plaster may take one month to dry out and the problems caused by damp, as distinct from water, may persist for much longer.
Nationally, strategic measures are being taken to provide protection against river and coastal flooding in the construction and maintenance of levees, embankments and coastal sea defences. Evacuation and rescue arrangements are managed by local authorities supported by police, fire and military services where necessary.
Flood defences may or may not be effective for all levels of flooding at all places.
