Theatre News: Shakespeare By The Lake at Bath Spa University's Full Tilt Theatre Company
Bath Spa University’s Full Tilt theatre company is staging a unique and radically modernised adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth that promises to extend the boundaries of theatrical adventure.

Following last year’s sell-out performance of Hamlet by the Lake (described by the Bath Chronicle’s critic as “Shakespeare at its best and not to be missed”), the Drama students are this year undertaking an even more challenging production on 8, 9 and 10 March.

Macbeth will be staged both in the stunning grounds of the Newton Park campus and in the brand new University Theatre. Audiences will be drawn into the magic and intrigue of the story from the outset as they arrive at an outdoor rave, complete with live DJ, hardcore clubbing witches – and plenty of fire.

As was the case with last year’s Hamlet, the production is adapted by Gunduz Kalic, Head of Drama at the University, and directed by Senior Lecturer Emma Gersch. The 40 strong cast is made up mainly of students, but also includes professional actors and university staff.

Emma Gersch explained: “This adaptation of Macbeth is radically modernised, but the classic themes of corruption, political intrigue and ambition in the play are strikingly portrayed. This is an extremely challenging piece for both the cast and the 40 strong production crew, and the standard of their work is exceptional.”

The production is supported by the University’s Artswork project that helps bring students from different artistic and creative disciplines together to work on live projects that will ultimately enhance their employability. In this instance, students of drama and music have worked together on all aspects of the production to produce a piece of work of highest professional quality.
