College News: Government Insist On Carbon Neutral Building In Future is Welcomed by Bedford College
News that the Government will insist on carbon neutral building in the future has been welcomed by Bedford College, which shares the only Centre for Vocational Excellence (CoVE) in "Skills for Energy" in the country.*

Bedford College is the only educational centre running CoVE-standard "Skills for Energy" courses in energy and sustainability . It runs a whole range of specialist learning areas on saving energy which are relevant to the construction industry . The College is hoping to offer two degree-level courses , one in Building Services and Sustainability and the other in Sustainable Construction, from September 2007.

"Anyone wanting to learn now how to build the carbon free homes in the future can sign up at Bedford College - we are leading the way in this area of construction technology," says Director of Technology Esin Esat.

Esin for Energy

Director of Technology at Bedford College Esin Esat is a leading proponent of sustainable energy. She set the target for the college to gain its CoVE status in Skills for Energy which was achieved through collaboration with the local community and industry.

Esin been actively involved in the work of BREF (Bedfordshire Renewable Energy Forum) and Beds SEP (Bedfordshire Sustainable Energy Partnership) since she joined the College in 2003.

The College is also a member of EEEGR (East of England Energy Group) working closely with many key organisations (including Universities, colleges, industry and government organisations) across the region.

Esin recently gave a talk to the British Association of Construction Heads on Workforce Development and Sustainability. It covered:

• Background information on technology (old & new) & our increasing reliance on energy generation
• The effect of Transport & Construction on our environment & sustainability of our lifestyles
• Related government initiatives (Energy White Paper, Budget report)
• The role of energy efficiency, a 'healthy' work environment and the modern energy & time saving technologies on business performance & sustainability.
• The role of the FE sector in developing sustainable communities
• Information on specific training programmes and Bedford College's experience in developing & delivering them
• Examples of passive and active methods of minimising energy consumption in buildings.
• A focus on supporting local businesses to become more sustainable
• A focus on partnerships and sharing good practice (locally & nationally)
It also included a greater 0emphasis on:
• A very wide range of renewable energy technologies
• Examples of a range of sustainable construction techniques and practices
• What Bedford College can do to help colleges across the U.K. incorporate energy and sustainability into their Construction training
• How building-integrated technology can be utilised to improve energy efficiency in our homes and businesses
• Utilising building-integrated technology to reduce our reliance on transport, save time and money and improve productivity in business premises
• An invitation to the Construction Heads to visit Bedford College so that good practice can be disseminated to help develop an environmentally aware UK construction workforce.

*Shares with Lowestoft College which focuses on "off shore" wind energy technology
