Science and Engineering Week is being celebrated at Bedford College - which will be welcoming 60 eight and nine-year-olds to begin the career path towards becoming doctors and dieticians.
The pupils of award-winning Hills Lower School in Bedford will be conducting a series of experiments to learn about the body and biology which will range from physio mechanics to growing bugs on Petri dishes.
“We want them to begin to understand that science is great subject to study as it used in a wide range of careers - from food production to physiotherapy and pathology to PE teaching,” explains lecturer Tracy Podbransky.
On Wednesday March 14th, pupils will be split into teams of 15 and spend 45 minutes working in four areas:
Body Zone (listening to their hearts and learning about being a Doctor)
Lever (using Mechano equipment to learn about bones and muscles)
Bug (they will see how microbes grow from a hand print and mould develops on food - useful in pathology)
Food (checking sugar content of orange squash and how starch hardens food in the digestive system)
Bedford College has 16,000 students from the ages of 14 upwards. It offers thousands of courses, full and part-time, many dedicated to engineering, technology and science-supported careers.
National Science and Engineering Week March 9th - 18th (formerly National Science Week) is co-ordinated by the British Association for the Advancement of Science and funded by the Department of Trade and Industry in partnership with the Engineering and Technology Board.
