University News: VOICE Launched at The University of East London
A major new weapon in the war against cyber-crime was launched at the 3rd International Conference on Global E-Security (ICGeS), held at the University of East London (UEL) Docklands Campus on 18-20 April.

Victims of Internet Crime Europe (VOICE) is the first ever Internet portal to offer a central conduit for the reporting and analysis of cyber-crime across the EU. Via the site, cyber-crime victims will be able to warn and advise others, while providing reliable and valuable data and allowing security experts to scrutinise criminal tactics.

The project is the brainchild of Dr Hamid Jahankhani, Principal Lecturer in Information Security at UEL and organiser of last week’s conference, together with David Liburn Waston, Principal Consultant at Forensic Computing Ltd.

Dr Jahankhani said: “Cyber-crime is now the world's biggest growth industry, costing an estimated $220 billion loss to companies and individuals each year. Yet gathering accurate information on the subject is inherently tough; victims often fail to report cyber-crime because they don’t know how or where to complain.

“Working with researchers, industry, law enforcement and government partners across Europe, we aim to create a single repository for Internet crime data for all countries across the EU. Victims will be able to provide information anonymously, allowing experts to conduct far more accurate analysis, capable of raising awareness and greatly assisting law enforcement.”

With increasing use of the Internet has come an exponential rise in cyber crime. The World Wide Web has been exploited by criminals globally and the increasingly widespread use of wireless networks allows hackers more opportunities for fraud, deception, identity theft and cyber-terrorism.

The 3rd International Conference on Global E-Security brought together leading experts in computer and Internet security from around the world to discuss latest developments in the war against cyber-crime.

Keynote speakers included national security expert Colonel John Doody, Vasilis Zorkadis of the Hellenic Data Protection Authority, Frank Leonhardt, journalist and commentator on VolP, Vernon Poole, Head of Business Consultancy at Sapphire, and Thomas Andersson, President of the Global Trust Centre,

Colonel Doody, Director of Interlocuter Services Limited, said: “In today’s information age, the role of security in enabling successful business can never be overstated. This conference offers a great opportunity to discuss information assurance and determine how the security community can face up to the challenges of the future.”

The Annual International Conference on Global e-Security was set up to create dialogue between crime-fighting agencies, the security industry, researchers and experts, and establish a platform from which security can be examined from several global perspectives.

Thomas Andersson said: “This is an extremely timely conference on a hugely important subject that has not yet been given the attention it fully deserves. There is a definite need for a more coherent approach to tackling the problems of cyber-crime, and initiatives like ICGeS and VOICE can greatly assist that development."
