Students interested in helping to save poor defenseless animals should read this article. A truthful and moving account of animal cruelty and what we can do to help prevent it from happening.
I expect a lot of people that read this have pet's. I do, I have a kitten and she is adorable and very affectionate. If someone was to abuse her, I wouldn't turn my back and ignore it. I'm sure you feel the same about your pet's too. I'm also sure your wondering why I have written this.
Well, give me just a few moment's of your time and I shall tell you. If you love animals as much as I do, you owe it to them and you will not regret reading this. I recently read about a macaque monkey called Felix. Monkey's are beautiful creature's and naturally they live like this...

Lovely isn't it? See, macaque monkeys are very social creature's that must be surrounded by many of the same specie's. When they are not, they very easily become withdrawn and depressed. Much as a human would without any social interaction, as studies have shown. In the wild, these animals are accustomed to being free to roam large areas with fresh air and the comfort of other monkey's. Now, compare that to this image...

The sadness in these monkeys eye's will stay with me for a long time. This is not the worst picture I could have displayed here, this picture is actually quite lovely compared to the vile thing's I have seen. These monkeys are confined to small cages, and they are not always as lucky as the one's in the above photo. At least those two have each other.
As a result of being trapped in these cages, the macaque monkeys can go crazy and some even self mutilate. They have nothing to do day after day after day. You think you get bored sometimes? Go and sit in a box for 5 minutes with nothing to look at and no-one to speak to and I'm sure 5 minute's would be enough. You have the choice to get out, these creature's do not.
As well as being torn from their natural habitat's and forced to exist in cages, (I use the word 'exist' because no one can call being confined to a box 'living') extremely cruel practises are carried out on these poor creature's. They are caused a great deal of physical pain as well as emotional distress, and often they are not even given appropriate anesthetics.
Sometimes they are also beaten by workers - I have seen sickening video's of this. The contraptions they are put in are somewhat reminiscent of sights from the Hell raiser movies. These monkey's are not only given experimental treatments but are also cut whilst wide awake and screaming. These practices are horrifying to say the very least. I cannot even list everything here that is done to them. I will however, provide links in case anybody would like to watch such video's or read any more information on this.
If what I have said has not already encouraged you to speak up against this, I suggest you watch these video's. Don't turn your back when you can help stop this.
I would also like to point out that the monkeys are given Parkinson's disease unnecessarily, as these practises do not work. Monkeys are different to us and therefore it is absurd to attempt to form a cure in this way. If you would like more information on this please check out this link -> www.peta.org.uk/feat/feat-oxford_experimenters.asp
There is no excuse for animal cruelty. None whatsoever, no matter what the reason. ESPECIALLY when this testing does not even work and there are other ways to find cures. I urge everyone reading this to please make your voice heard. Speak up peacefully to those with the power to stop this. In an age where people pride themselves on being 'advanced' and more 'humane' it is an absolute joke that problems such as these still persist. I am glad I learnt about these things. I watched the video's and I felt violently sick, and trust me when I say I have a strong stomach. I was shocked, appalled and extremely angry.
I have decided to go vegan, and to sell 2 of my favourite item's of clothing which happen to be a trench coat and a pair of thigh high leather boot's. I will never wear leather again, it's not worth an animal being skinned alive for really, is it? I am going to donate the money I receive for them to PETA in a hope that at least the animals will get something back for what they wrongfully gave me. I am researching on how I can only buy product's that have not been tested on animals in any way, as it's surprising what animals suffer for...
So please, I urge and even beg you... Check out PETA's website, sign the petition for Felix the macaque monkey. getactive.peta.org/campaign/savefelixuk07 Sign any petition against animal cruelty you can get your hands on. Spend a little time learning what's really in your food and how it gets that way. Cheese for example, contains calf stomach... www.vegsoc.org/info/cheese.html but ah, if you were not aware of this as I was not, it's because they call it rennet. I mean they wouldn't want to put 'calf stomach' on the ingredient's would they... GROSS!!
Going vegetarian can save 100 animals a year. Surprised at the number? So was I! 'Oh but I can't make a difference..' I thought wrong! It makes a very big difference! It kinda makes me think of a scene in the film 'The Crow', where Eric Draven's character is tossing engagement rings and says "Every one of these is a life you helped destroy..."
Thank you ever so much for taking the time to read this. If even one person out there has taken this in and decided to do something about it, I've done what I set out to do. I must add that I do not in any way endorse violent protests and this must be stopped peacefully.
The opinions stated in this text are mine and nothing to do with www.thestudentzone.com or PETA.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QRBcHIIsXc -> I must warn you that this video is for over 18's only and is quite graphic and disturbing. It had me in tears, but I will never regret watching it because by closing one's eye's to what's going on... suffering will never be stopped and the sadists and inhumane people out there can carry on in the shadows we cast with the wool we pull over our eye's.
So come on, steel yourself, and go to specsavers! ;)
