The
Myerscough College Football Development Centre has enjoyed an excellent year with a series of league wins and student successes.
After being named the leading College for the men’s sport in England and Wales in 2006 by the Football Association, there have been a number of football triumphs over the last season. The College’s under 18 team were the undefeated champions of the Lancashire Floodlit League, whilst the under 19 team won the English Colleges FA League for the second successive year, and also won the Lancashire Schools and Colleges Cup.
Football Development Centre Manager Philip Brown said of the sensational season:
“The students have once again shown excellent commitment to the programme, they worked tremendously hard and the accolades they have received are well deserved. A presentation night is being held tonight at the College to reward their success.”
A number of students have achieved significant personal feats, including Antony Pilkington, aged 18 from Darwen, who signed a professional playing contract with Stockport County FC in December. His brother Danny Pilkington, aged 16, is at the end of his first year at College, and Danny was selected to tour Hungary with Great Britain Catholic Schools. Neil Davies, aged 19 from Wigan, was again selected for the English Colleges national team, a football tour which took him to Italy and Korea, and Chris Smalley, aged 17 from Darwen, was a regular in the Lancashire County FA under 18 team. There have also been a high number of players breaking into the semi-professional game through the College’s links with local football clubs, an outstanding achievement at such a young age.
All of the players are enrolled on a National Diploma Football Studies or Foundation Degree Football Coaching course at the College. Course leader Gareth Evans added:
“I am really proud to see students from the football education programme playing at such high levels, and for another player to secure a professional contract is brilliant”.

Myerscough College offers a fantastic range of courses in Football and Sports Studies from entry to degree level, ranging for the First Diploma Football Studies to the Foundation Degree in Football Coaching.
