Next week an Academy award winning documentary film about climate change will be the focus of discussion at the University of Aberdeen.
An Inconvenient Truth - the film presented by former US Vice President Al Gore – gave a stark warning about the impact of global warming.
When the film came out in 2006 Gore also trained around 1,000 environmentalists in the hope they would help educate the public and stimulate action. Each of his group was carefully chosen on the basis of their passion for saving the planet.
Rosina Sinclair is one of the presenters, and, with her husband Michael, is visiting King’s College Centre on Monday, June 11 for an event to be facilitated by University Rector Robin Harper MSP.
Rosina said: “In essence, the film’s message is that the human race needs to act now in order to ensure that our children and grandchildren inherit a comfortable climate, clean air to breathe, and adequate food and water sources.
“The PowerPoint presentation slides and explanations we will be providing are graphic. Once seen, it is impossible to deny that our water sources are drying up and that the great ice caps at the poles are melting.
“However the intention is not to alarm: instead we want to give a clear, scientifically based message and explain that the timetable is such that, if we act now, there is hope.”
Starting with refreshments at 5.30pm, Rosina and Michael will then give an illustrated hour long talk beginning at 6pm and this will be followed by debate and discussion involving the audience.
There is an opportunity from 8 - 10pm to continue the discussion to consider societal learning, and to meet others thinking along the same lines.
Morag Paterson, co-organiser, MBA tutor at the University and leadership consultant said: "Supported by various networks and interest groups, our intention is that it will be a cross sectoral event, attracting a host of people around an important issue to develop a momentum for change. There has already been a huge, excited response and we expect a capacity audience."
Anyone who is passionate about the environment and/or curious about ways which can support and sustain 21st century living and working, with its multiple questions, challenges and issues are invited to attend.
Booking is essential. Please email Morag Paterson at morag@somethingmore.org.uk or g.hall@dln.org.uk.
Places are available on a first come first served basis.
In the event of a full-house, please note that associated events will be organised to continue the discussion in the future, and you are welcome to join a mailing list.
