Vicar to spend 10 nights on the tiles in cash plea
Vicar to spend 10 nights on the tiles in cash plea

A CAMDEN Town vicar will be closer to heaven at the end of the month when he stages a 10-day vigil on the roof of his church.

From Thursday June 29 Father Malcolm Hunter will be hooking a hammock on to scaffolding at the top of St Michael’s church in Camden Road to raise money towards the £100,000 needed to help fix the roof.
The Heritage Lottery Fund has promised £350,000 towards the cost, but only if the church can come up with the remaining £100,000 in match funding.
The Grade-II listed building has been put on the At Risk Register by English Heritage and needs repairs totalling £1 million. The first stage of this was recently completed with major repair work to the front and bell tower.
Father Malcolm, who chose the stunt to highlight the important role the church plays for homeless people, will be joined by parishioners and homeless people and has vowed not to leave his perch – even to eat or answer the call of nature.
“The people below better watch out,” he joked.
Another thing the people below will have to look out for is a bucket which will be lowered at regular intervals for people to put money into.
Father Malcolm, who commutes to work on a high-powered motorcycle, used to run his own building company but gave it up, and a six -figure salary, to become a priest on £17,000 a year.
He said: “I’m looking forward to having a bit of time to think, but I’m not very keen on heights or the rain.”

To donate go to www.anightonthetiles.org. or send a cheque to St Michael’s Church to Basement, The Rectory, 191 St Pancras Way, London, NW1 9NH.
