University News: Police Officer Praises New Course at the University of Wolverhampton
Degree of success for top police officer - A senior police officer who juggled crime fighting with studying for a Masters degree has praised a new course at the University of Wolverhampton.

David Collins, 49, was part of the first cohort of students to gain an MA in Coaching and Mentoring from the University of Wolverhampton Business School. The group is believed to be the first set of students to graduate from a UK Business School with an MA in the subject.

David is the Assistant Chief Constable at North Yorkshire Police and has worked as a coach and mentor for police officers and staff for many years. He decided to study for the MA, which is taught via block release over a three-year period, to understand more about the wider theory and research behind coaching and mentoring.

He said: “The course was first class. We had excellent lecturers who knew their subject and are passionate about supporting their students. This has not only been a wonderful opportunity to learn much more about coaching and mentoring but it has actually been a life changing experience.”

David, who also runs his own coaching consultancy business, added he now applies a far wider range of professional coaching and mentoring techniques in his own work.

The MA, which involves five intensive weekend residentials each year, was launched in September 2004 and is one of only a handful of such courses in the country.

Award leader Jenni Jones said: “We are proud of our first ever students on this programme. Over the last three years, they and the course have gone from strength to strength.

“All of them are practising coaches and/or mentors in business, and have used their learning from the University of Wolverhampton Business School to enhance their professional practice. We are going to stay in contact with them so they can continue to share their experiences and research with ourselves and fellow students and to act as role models for both the University and the profession.”

The course, based at the University’s Telford Campus, is aimed at professional coaches and mentors, together with managers, leaders and human resource development professionals, and those in other professions who find that coaching and mentoring is becoming an important part of their professional role.

Students explore their own coaching and mentoring practice, the psychology of learning, coaching and mentoring, Corporate, Executive and Professional Coaching and typical modules include Coaching and Mentoring in Practice and Principles and Theory of Learning, Coaching and Mentoring.
