An Egyptian judge will be taking the finer details of British law back to his home country after gaining a Masters degree from the University of Wolverhampton.
Sherif Mohamed Al-araby Hassan, from Cairo, has spent a year studying in the city after gaining a prestigious scholarship.
The 30-year-old is a commissioner, or junior judge, and was only one of 25 talented students in Egypt to gain a British Chevening Scholarship, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Sherif studied for an MSc Construction Law with the School of Engineering and the Built Environment. He is returning to Egypt, but enjoyed his time in Wolverhampton so much that he is looking into doing a PhD.
The MSc provides a comprehensive study of legal principles and construction procedures, and Sherif visited the Technology and Construction Court in London to meet a judge who specialises in the area.
Sherif said: “I chose to study in Wolverhampton because the course is unique and the University has got experts in the field. I have experienced a new system of education and made a lot of new friends from different countries, including Spain, Germany and Poland.
“The most important thing I studied was the main points of the English legal system. In the last five years we have begun to see multi-national and UK companies come to invest in Egypt, and some legal cases have been brought to our courts.”
Director of Postgraduate Studies, Dr Issaka Ndekugri, said: ”Sherif has been a model student and I am pleased he decided to study with us. The course is a combination of the law and the processes of the construction industry.”
Head of the Construction and Infrastructure Department, Professor David Proverbs, added: “It is a very prestigious scholarship and the department is very proud to have supported Sherif through his MSc in Construction Law.”
To conclude his time in Wolverhampton, Sherif gave a presentation about his experiences to members of the University’s Executive, including Vice Chancellor Professor Caroline Gipps.
