Past and present University of Wolverhampton students have celebrated the success of a work placement scheme with a leading local business.
The University’s School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT) has been organising placements with Birmingham Midshires for the last 12 years - and some students have gained a job there after finishing their studies.
Placement scheme organisers from SCIT’s Employability and Placement Unit recently visited the Birmingham Midshires offices in Pendeford to catch up with former students.
Martin O'Hanlon, team manager of the Retail IT Academy, is one of the students to gain a job at the company after a placement. He said: “Whilst I was at University I had very little work experience and so a placement taught me about the need for work ethic and gave me an insight into what people expect of me.
“The placement scheme has been an enormous success with a lot of placement students wanting to come back to work at Birmingham Midshires.”
Two students who are currently on placement are Dan Hillman and Andy Jones, who have been at Birmingham Midshires for just over three months now. Dan said: “I've enjoyed learning from the team and I'm treated like a colleague and not a student which is great.”
Professor Gerald Bennett, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Research and External Development at the University, said: "Placements are a great idea for everyone concerned. It’s a great relationship we have and for a forward thinking business like Birmingham Midshires, there is no better way of taking on board new recruits. Long may it continue.”
