A University of Wolverhampton graduate is jetting off to America to work with a top glass sculptor after winning a prestigious national award.
Joanna Manousis, from Shrewsbury, graduated with a first class honours degree in Glass from the University this year and entered her piece entitled ‘Lace’ for The Pearson Glass Awards 2007.
The 23-year-old won the student category for Best Newcomer for the piece, which is an installation canopy of glass lace made out of fused Venetian cane.
The artwork is now being exhibited, along with other pieces of Jo’s blow/kiln cast sculpture at The Bilston Craft Gallery, until Saturday, November 17 2007.
Joanna is also preparing to head off to Seattle to work with glass sculptor Karen Willenbrink-Johnsen for a few months.
She said: “I was overwhelmed to win such a notable and prestigious award within the glass sector of the art world. Best Newcomer is a new category for the award ceremony, which is now running into its third year. It marks a great achievement for a recent graduate.”
Christine Bird-Jones, Lecturer in Glass at the University’s School of Art and Design, said: “Joanna is a fantastic example of how successful the course is and what our talented students achieve.”
