Hardships Loans are the means by which the government helps to get students out of financial difficulty. You are only eligible for a Hardship Loan if you have already taken out your full student loan allowance.
In brief:
In exceptional circumstances when even a Hardship Loan is not enough to get you out of difficulty you may be able to apply for an Access Fund
Introduction
Special Government Hardship Loan
Students in financial difficulty may apply for an additional loan that is repayable in the same way as the Student Loan. If you wish to apply for any other financial support, you must have applied for this loan first. Full details on how to apply are available from Student Services or from the Students' Advice Centre in the Students' Guild.
Access Funds
Access Funds are allocated by the government to provide additional funding for students in exceptional financial difficulty. Eligible home students who have taken out a full Student Loan and Government Hardship Loan may apply for the Access Fund. Forms for Access Fund applications are generally available from Student Advice Centres or Student Services. Help with childcare, rent, course, and other general living costs is also available.
You are strongly advised to discuss your application with the Student Welfare Adviser. Your application must be supported by relevant documentation, for example bank statements, copies of letters from credit companies, rent invoices, etc. Many applications are rejected because students have not provided enough information - discussing your application with the Welfare Adviser beforehand can help to ensure this does not happen.
Short-term loans, as well as grants, may be available from the Access Fund to assist those who experience delays in receiving their usual funding. Further details will be available at enrolment from Student Services and the Student Advice Centres.
For more information contact your Student Welfare Officer, LEA or go to the SLC website.
