As a college or university student, you may be eligible to receive an Assembly Learning Grant (ALG) to help pay for books, equipment, travel and childcare if your home address is in Wales, even if you are not planning on attending a welsh university. This grant is not available to students from England and has come about thanks to the measure of legislative power that has been devolved to the National Assembly for Wales.
The Assembly Learning Grant, dysgu'r cynulliad
To get a grant, you must also have lived in the United Kingdom for the last three years. You can get the grant wherever you study in the United Kingdom. The grant is for students taking a full or part-time higher education course and for students aged 18 or over who are taking a further education course leading to a nationally recognised qualification. If you are on a further education course, you will only qualify for a grant if the course amounts to at least 275 contact hours per year.
The grant is means-tested, and getting one depends on your, or your family's, residual income. Residual income means income before tax, minus certain allowances. You cannot get a grant if your, or your family's, residual income is more than £15,000 per year. Grants for part-time students range from £300 to £750 and, for full-time students, from £450 to £1,500.
You should ask your local education authority for more information on how to apply for a grant. There is also information on the grant on the website of the National Assembly for Wales at www.learning.wales.gov.uk
