The Policy Universities
The Labour Government have invested an extra £1.7 billion in Higher Education between 1997/98 and 2003/04. They say they have reversed the cuts in funding per student and in 2001-02 funding in real terms per student rose for the first time in a decade according to Labour Party figures.
They remain committed to funding universities through direct Government grants.
The Policy - Students
The Labour Party claim to have reformed the student finance system to enable an expansion in Higher Education (HE) and widen access to under-represented groups. They say it is fair that those who benefit from HE contribute toward its costs but recognise that real concerns have arisen about some aspects of the current system and are currently reviewing student funding to address these.
They aim to get more students than ever before to go into HE. Student numbers have risen every year since 1998 and are now at a record high. They also aim to ensure that by 2010, 50 per cent of young people will benefit from higher education by the age of 30.
They say
Education is Labour's number one priority. A good education is vital to our children's future and to a prosperous society. Our ambition is a world-class education system for all. When we came to office, standards were too low and schools and universities had suffered from years of cuts.
