Students thinking of voting Liberal Democrats, you can read their policy below relevant to the student community within colleges and universities.
In brief:
* They would provide Higher Education (HE) with the money it needs by replacing the Governments taxes on students - tuition and top-up fees - with tax on those earning over £100,000 a year
* They would reintroduce grants for the poorest university students as in Scotland and Wales
* They are committed to providing opportunities for all not only those who can afford it!
The Policy - Universities
The Liberal Democrats are committed to spending more on universities and other HE institutions through direct government grants. These they suggest should be paid for by a 50% rate of tax on all those earning over £100,000.
They believe that universities should be maintained within the public sector and paid for by taxation. The Liberal Democrats are against private funding for universities and other HE institutions
The Policy - Students
The Liberal Democrats believe that by raising a new 50% tax rate on earnings over £100,000 they could remove the need for tuition fees and certainly negate the need for 'top-up fees'.
They also believe that this tax raise would allow them to reintroduce grants to the poorest students in England as they already have in Wales and Scotland, where the Liberal Democrats have been part of coalition governments and have been able to implement this policy.
They say:
In Scotland, the Liberal Democrats insisted on the abolition of student tuition fees as the price of joining the partnership administration in 1999. Tuition fees have been abolished there. In Scotland - and in Wales where we are also in partnership government - we have reintroduced maintenance grants for the poorest students. And the result of these two measures is that the increase in applications to university in Scotland is far greater than the increase in England. (Charles Kennedy, Party leader)
